Giving to the Homeless

One of my goals this year is to assemble ready-made practical gifts to give to those people pan handling at the side of the road. I barely ever carry cash and don't like to give cash anyways (because I don't want to support an addiction). I am finally getting my list together to get this accomplished. **This post will be a work in progress because I know I won't finish right now.

1) Ikea Tote Bag -This will be used to hold the other items, but hopefully is something the individual will be able to keep and use in the future as well (instead of those flimsy plastic bags). These bags are pretty big, 32"width, 13"across, 14"depth. They have a set of wide, durable shoulder straps, for carrying heavier items, plus a second, hand-length set of straps. They are made of waterproof and tear resistant nylon material.

A homeless person could use this for a variety of things and they are only $0.59 each at Ikea. I am thinking of asking for a bulk discount or a donation though.

Other ideas include: Rain Poncho ($0.99 at target), heat-retaining foil emergency blankets, socks, waterbottles, granola bars, handy wipes, toothbrush/toothpaste, pre-paid gift cards (subway?, etc.), writing paper, pens, pre-stamped envelopes, deoderant, nail clippers, comb, razor,

** I am going to call the homeless shelter and ask for recommendations before doing anything. Any gift would of course come with a personal note & some candies. This may be a good activity to have a girl scout troop, youth group or afterschool program help out with. Imagine getting a hand decorated card from a child - precious!
